ACTIVITIES
The Arts and Crafts

The Kennolyn Arts and Crafts program offers a wide range of activities for budding artists or those who just like to do stuff with their hands and explore their creativity. Crafts is the basic activity that exposes campers to many different creative projects throughout their session. They might work with Papier Mâché, Tie-Dye, Ink Blown Art, Paper Making or one of many other projects. We also incorporate creative games that work especially well to introduce younger campers to different mediums and guide them toward artistic exploration.

Of course, we have supplies for lanyard crafts, hemp string bracelets and necklaces, and all the stand by camp activities. These are great for free time and cabin time and give campers an activity to keep their hands (and minds) busy.

Campers can also chose to get more in depth in many Art activities that are offered in addition to the Crafts activities. There is no requirement to sign up for any crafts or art activities but also no limit to how many you can sign up for. Spend no time or all your time in the Crafts Shop. It's up to you. Here's a list of all the Arts and Crafts Activities available for separate sign up:

  • Wheel Pottery
  • Hand Built Pottery
  • Scrapbooking and Journaling
  • Silk Paints
  • Stained Glass
  • Many other projects...!

Here is some information on just a few of our AWSOME art projects!

Wheel Pottery

Wheel pottery is offered to campers entering 3rd grade and older. After an orientation which includes clay basics and a safety overview, participants learn to prepare clay for throwing, center a pot on the wheel, throw a small pot or vessel with consistency, recognize common flaws, finish their pieces, and glazing. Pieces are fired in our kilns (by trained counselors) and ready to take home.

Hand Built Pottery

Hand Built Pottery is offered to campers of all ages. This activity emphasizes ceramic art projects that utilize sculpturing techniques rather than wheel throwing. Working with slabs and coils, campers build projects such as shallow dishes and plates, animal masks, picture frames, and even clay whistles. The emphasis is on design and texture and hand building offers a quicker path to accomplished projects than wheel pottery. Pieces are fired and glazed and ready to take home.

Scrapbook and Journaling

Create a wonderful keepsake of your camp experience with this fun class. Each camper will get a chance to create a scrapbook with photos and embellishments. You will also have some instruction in expressive writing and will be encouraged to keep a camp journal. Take home your scrapbook at the end of camp.

Silk Painting

In this class, campers will concentrate on one silk painting project such as a scarf or wall hanging. Emphasis will be placed on technique and range of color. Campers will be introduced to different kinds of application such as colored resist, shading techniques using rubbing alcohol, and background preparation. This class will be fun for campers who have already enjoyed silk painting and want to do more, but are also open to those who have an interest in focusing on one art project. Grades 5 and up.
